The area's rolling, uneven terrain keeps farms relatively small, averaging around 60 acres. Mogiana is one of Brazil's most recognized growing regions, and this particular lot is graded Fine Cup (FC), the top category in Brazilian coffee grading. The beans are naturally processed, meaning the fruit dries around the seed before milling.

The Ethiopia component is from Sidamo, a region known for its diversity of landrace varieties. These are indigenous coffee plants that have developed locally over generations, often differing from one farm to the next. When smallholder farmers deliver their coffee to the local cooperative or washing station, the resulting washed lot reflects that genetic variety in the cup. Farming in Sidamo stays largely traditional: producers intercrop coffee with food crops to feed their families and make full use of their land, and most farms operate without fertilizers or pesticides by default. Nearly all work is done by hand.

Pairing a natural-processed Brazil with a washed Ethiopian is a common approach for blends that aim to balance body and brightness. The natural process from Brazil adds weight and sweetness, while the washed Ethiopian brings cleaner, more layered character from its diverse landrace genetics.

About Alternate Route

Alternate Route Coffee Co. was started by husband-and-wife Ian and Kellie Wahl in Alberta. The roastery is located just outside Edmonton, near the Edmonton International Airport, where they roast on a Probat P12. Today, the operation is led by Kellie Wahl and Head Roaster Corie Sackville, and the team is majority women-owned and women-run.

They source from specific growing regions and work with producers they trust on quality and transparency. All roasting is done in small batches to keep a close eye on consistency across every bag.

"Alternate Route is our first women-owned and operated roaster, and this month I'm proud to announce every Alternate Route coffee we're featuring is sourced from women coffee producers. I'm particularly excited to share their coffee from Huila, Colombia with you - this is one of my favourite balanced coffees this year."

- Dean, Director of Coffee
