The tradition passed through Claudio Barbosa de Paula, then to Danilo's father Jairo, and in 1979 Danilo took over the operation. Today, Danilo's wife Imaculada and sons Vitor Marcelo and Sergio Ricardo all work the farms together. Their total landholding covers 3,322 hectares, with 983 hectares in active coffee production and over 1,000 hectares set aside as protected natural reserves. The farms sit at 950 to 1,100 meters above sea level in the Cerrado Mineiro, which holds the distinction of being the world's first Designation of Origin for coffee.

For years the Barbosas focused on conventional coffee production, but in 2018 Danilo shifted the business toward specialty coffee. Part of that shift meant bringing in Deyvid Leandro, a local producer with more than 20 years of experience who focuses specifically on quality control and fermentation. That collaboration paid off quickly: the family won Brazil's Cup of Excellence in both 2021 and 2024. For this particular lot, whole coffee cherries were hand-picked and sealed in GrainPro bags for 96 hours of anaerobic fermentation (an oxygen-free process that lets native microbes slowly break down the fruit). No additives were used. After fermentation, the cherries were dried slowly on open patios until they reached the right moisture level.

Cerrado Mineiro sits across parts of Minas Gerais and Goiás, a tropical savanna zone with clearly defined wet and dry seasons that make harvest timing predictable and consistent. The region has been building a strong reputation in specialty coffee over the last few decades, and the Barbosa family's farms sit at the center of that.

About Eclipse

Eclipse Coffee Roasters was founded in 2014 in Canmore, Alberta. They roast to order, meaning each bag is roasted after you purchase it rather than pulled from existing stock, so the coffee arrives as fresh as possible.

Eclipse screens every coffee they carry for both environmental and social responsibility at the farm level, and they publish those findings on their product pages. They typically carry 10 to 15 different coffees at any one time and pay above market price to the farms they source from, with the stated goal of helping those producers reinvest in their operations and local communities.
