Why You Should Ditch Your French Press for an AeroPress
Your French press has been good to you. It's simple, it's reliable, and it makes coffee without much fuss. But if you want better coffee with and easier and faster brewing process, it's time to consider the AeroPress.
The French Press Problem
French presses are popular because they seem foolproof. Add coffee, add water, wait four minutes, press. What could go wrong?
Quite a bit, actually. That four-minute wait time is longer than it needs to be, and it often leads to over-extraction and bitter coffee. The metal mesh filter lets oils and fine particles through, which some people love but can make your coffee taste muddy. And if you forget about it for an extra minute or two? Your coffee goes from good to harsh.
Then there's cleanup. Those grounds get everywhere. The mesh filter is annoying to rinse properly. And if you want to make just one cup instead of a whole pot? You're out of luck.
Why the AeroPress is Better
The AeroPress solves every problem the French press has, while being just as easy to use.
Better taste, less bitterness. The paper filter removes oils and particles that can make coffee taste muddy or harsh. The shorter brewing time (1-2 minutes vs 4+ minutes) prevents over-extraction. Your coffee tastes cleaner and brighter.
No timing stress. With a French press, forgetting about your coffee for an extra two minutes ruins it. With an AeroPress, you have flexibility. One minute works. Two minutes works. You won't accidentally destroy your coffee by getting distracted.
Single servings. Make exactly as much coffee as you want. One cup, two cups, whatever. No waste, and your coffee is always fresh.
Actually easy cleanup. Press the plunger and the grounds pop out in a neat little puck. Rinse the chamber. Done. No grounds stuck in mesh filters or floating around your sink.
More portable. The AeroPress is lighter, more durable, and easier to pack than a glass French press. It won't break if you drop it.
Making the Switch
If you're used to French press coffee, you might worry that AeroPress coffee will be too different. It won't be. You'll get the full-bodied coffee that's cleaner and more consistent, and actually simpler to brew than French press:
- Grind one AeroPress spoonful of coffee beans
- Fill quickly with boiling water to the #4 mark
- Wait 1-2 minutes (we like 1:30, but anywhere in between is good)
- Swirl once or twice to mix the grounds back with the water
- Press gently
That's it. Same simplicity, better results, faster, less cleanup.
Your French press served you well, but it's time for an upgrade. The AeroPress does everything your French press does, just better.
