Helcio started working in coffee at 15 and took over Santa Lucia farm with his wife Glycia in 1976. Back then, the focus was on volume over quality, with limited access to specialty coffee knowledge and technology.
In the '90s, Helcio co-founded Aprocam to improve coffee quality in Brazil's Carmo de Minas region. Working with scientists and experts, he was among the first to adopt the Pulped Natural Processing Method that's now standard for specialty Brazilian coffee.
Santa Lucia's coffees have been consistently recognized since 2017, though Helcio worries about labor shortages affecting the region's future coffee production.
