Which Moccamaster Is Right for You? (2026 Canadian Guide)

By Dean Pitton, Director of Coffee at Stillwater Coffee Club — he tastes and selects every coffee the club ships and has run coffee tastings for over 14 years.

Moccamaster is really one excellent drip brewer sold in a few variants, so choosing is simpler than it looks. The decisions are: glass carafe with a hot plate, or thermal carafe that needs no heat; and full size, or a smaller batch. This guide sorts the three we stock so you can match the brewer to how you actually drink coffee.

The short answer:

  • Best overall (glass): KBGV Select — adds a half- or full-carafe switch to the classic glass model.
  • Best thermal: KBT — a stainless thermal carafe and no hot plate to flatten the coffee.
  • Best for one or two people: KBTS — the same thermal design in a smaller one-litre size.
Model Best for Carafe Capacity Hot plate Price (CAD)
KBGV Select Best overall, glass Glass ~1.25 L (10 cups) Yes (auto-off) $476
KBT Thermal, full size Stainless thermal ~1.25 L (10 cups) No $450
KBTS 1–2 people Stainless thermal 1 L (32 oz) No $437

Prices current as of June 2026 (Stillwater). All models are SCA-certified, brew in the 196–205°F range, finish a full batch in about six minutes, carry a five-year warranty, and are hand-built in the Netherlands.

Best overall (glass): KBGV Select

  • Price: $476 CAD
  • Carafe: Glass, on an auto-off hot plate
  • Capacity: ~1.25 L (10 cups), with a half- or full-batch switch
  • Highlight: The classic glass Moccamaster with a half-carafe option

Why it shines

The KBGV Select adds a switch that brews a half or full carafe and adjusts the brew speed and hot-plate temperature to match, so a smaller batch is not scorched. It is the most flexible glass model and the one most people should choose if they want a hot plate.

Who it's for

You like a glass carafe on a warming plate, you sometimes brew less than a full pot, and you want the most adaptable everyday Moccamaster.

What owners say

Owners love the build quality, the five-year warranty, and the flavour. The common complaint applies to any glass brewer: the hot plate will eventually flatten the coffee if you leave the carafe on it, which is why some prefer a thermal model.

Worth noting

It has no grinder and no automatic bloom. Pair it with a burr grinder such as the Fellow Ode for an even grind.

Best thermal: KBT

  • Price: $450 CAD
  • Carafe: Stainless steel thermal (no hot plate)
  • Capacity: ~1.25 L (10 cups)
  • Highlight: Full-size brewing with no hot plate to cook the coffee

Why it shines

The KBT swaps the glass carafe and hot plate for an insulated stainless carafe, so the coffee holds heat without continuing to cook. It uses a manual drip-stop on the basket, giving you control over the flow. For full carafes you will not finish quickly, it keeps the cup tasting fresher.

Who it's for

You brew a full carafe and drink it over an hour or two, and you would rather keep the coffee off a hot plate.

What owners say

Owners love that the thermal carafe preserves flavour and that there is no plate to manage. The common note is that the carafe pour is slower than glass and the manual drip-stop takes a moment to learn.

Worth noting

Thermal carafes hold heat well but not forever. Like the others, it has no grinder.

Best for one or two people: KBTS

  • Price: $437 CAD
  • Carafe: Stainless steel thermal
  • Capacity: 1 L (32 oz), smaller batch
  • Highlight: The thermal Moccamaster sized for a smaller household

Why it shines

The KBTS is the KBT's thermal design in a smaller one-litre size, built to brew well at lower volumes. Drip brewers make their best coffee near their rated capacity, so a smaller machine suits a smaller daily batch better than half-filling a large one.

Who it's for

You brew for one or two people, you want a thermal carafe, and a full-size pot is more than you need.

What owners say

Owners like the right-sized batch and the same build quality as the larger models. The common note is simply that it is small — not the choice if you regularly serve a crowd.

Worth noting

If you sometimes make more, the full-size KBT or the half/full KBGV Select gives you more headroom.

How to choose

  • Glass or thermal? Glass (KBGV Select) if you like a hot plate and finish the pot reasonably quickly. Thermal (KBT, KBTS) if you want the coffee kept hot without cooking.
  • How much do you brew? Full carafe for a household: KBGV Select or KBT. One or two cups at a time: KBTS.
  • Need a half-pot option? Only the KBGV Select adjusts for a half batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Moccamaster KBGV Select and the KBT?

The KBGV Select has a glass carafe on an auto-off hot plate and a half- or full-batch switch. The KBT has a stainless thermal carafe and no hot plate, keeping coffee hot without cooking it.

Is a glass or thermal Moccamaster better?

Glass with a hot plate is convenient if you finish the pot quickly. Thermal keeps coffee tasting fresher over a longer period because there is no plate continuing to heat it. Neither brews a different cup; the difference is how the coffee is held.

Does the Moccamaster have a grinder or bloom function?

No. Every Moccamaster brews from pre-ground coffee and does not bloom automatically, so pair it with a good burr grinder for the best results.

Are Moccamaster brewers worth it?

They are SCA-certified, hand-built, repairable, and carry a five-year warranty, so they are a long-term buy rather than a disposable appliance. If you want a durable drip brewer that makes excellent coffee, they earn their price.
