Nespresso vs Espresso Machine: Essenza Mini vs Bambino vs Magnifica Start (2026)
Our picks at a glance
A Nespresso machine is the easiest way to make espresso at home, and an espresso machine that brews freshly ground beans makes stronger, fresher coffee. This guide compares the Nespresso Essenza Mini with two machines that brew freshly ground beans: the Breville Bambino, which you operate by hand, and the De'Longhi Magnifica Start, a bean-to-cup machine that grinds whole beans and brews them at the press of a button.
Quick picks:
- Least work: Nespresso Essenza Mini. Choose it if you want a coffee in under a minute at the press of a button.

- One button, fresh beans: De'Longhi Magnifica Start. Choose it if you want Nespresso's one-button routine with any beans you buy.

Nespresso brews espresso the way an espresso machine does, with a third of the coffee
The Essenza Mini is one of Nespresso's Original capsule machines. It brews under pressure, the same way an espresso machine does, and makes a short, concentrated coffee with crema, the layer of fine foam on top. The difference is the amount of coffee. An Original capsule holds 5 to 6 g of ground coffee. A cafe double uses about 18 g to make about 36 g of espresso. So a capsule shot is weaker: a 2020 study in Scientific Reports measured 2.2 to 3.6% dissolved coffee in capsule espresso. A cafe espresso usually has 8 to 12%.
A Nespresso latte tastes weaker because the milk covers a small shot
A capsule shot has a third of the coffee of a cafe double, so it has less flavour to carry through the milk. The difference from a cafe drink is easiest to taste in a latte or cappuccino. The Bambino's 18 g double puts three times as much coffee into the milk.
Capsule coffee is ground up to a year before you brew it
Ground coffee starts to go stale within about an hour in open air, as it loses aroma and reacts with oxygen. Nespresso seals each capsule in aluminium with very little oxygen inside, which slows staling. Nespresso says the capsules keep for 12 months after production. The coffee in a capsule was ground when the capsule was made, up to a year before you brew it. The Bambino and the Magnifica Start brew coffee ground seconds earlier, which keeps more of its aroma.
Original capsules make crema the way an espresso machine does, with less of it
Crema is the layer of fine foam on top of an espresso. It forms from carbon dioxide, a gas that coffee beans hold after roasting. The gas dissolves into the water under pressure and comes out as tiny bubbles when the shot leaves the machine. Freshly roasted beans hold more of the gas, so they make more crema. Original capsules still hold some carbon dioxide when they are sealed, so an Essenza Mini shot has crema, with less of it than a shot from fresh beans.
The Essenza Mini takes the least work, and the Bambino takes weeks of practice
The Essenza Mini takes a capsule and a button press. It heats up in about 25 seconds, and every cup comes out the same as the last. The Magnifica Start takes a grind setting, chosen once, and then a button press. The Bambino takes the most work: for each shot you grind the coffee, weigh it into the basket and tamp it, and getting that right takes a few weeks of practice.
Least work: Nespresso Essenza Mini
Choose the Essenza Mini if you want a small black coffee in under a minute and want the machine to do all of the work. Other roasters also sell capsules that fit Original machines, and some of those capsules are compostable. Owners report four to six years of daily use. Their common complaints are the small tank and bin: the 0.6 L tank holds about five lungos, and the bin holds 5 or 6 used capsules, so you refill the tank and empty the bin every day or two.
Closest to cafe espresso: Breville Bambino
Choose the Bambino if you want espresso as strong as a cafe's and will spend a few weeks learning to make it. Owners single out its steam wand, which makes microfoam, the fine, glossy milk used for latte art. Their common complaints are a small drip tray that fills quickly, and a wet puck of used coffee if you remove the basket right after a shot.
The Bambino comes with a pressurised basket, a basket with a narrow outlet that holds back the water so pre-ground coffee still brews a good shot. For cafe-strength shots, use the standard basket with coffee from a grinder that grinds fine enough for espresso.
One button, fresh beans: De'Longhi Magnifica Start
Choose the Magnifica Start if you want Nespresso's one-button routine with any beans you buy. You choose one of 13 grind settings to suit the beans. The 250 g bean container on top holds most of a bag. The 1.8 L water tank holds three times as much as the Essenza Mini's. Owners call it good value and find the removable part that brews the coffee easy to rinse. Their common complaints are that steaming milk on the wand takes practice, and that the shots are weaker than the Bambino's.
The Magnifica Start is 35 cm tall and 44 cm deep, and you pour the beans in from the top, so measure your counter depth and the space under your upper cabinets. It weighs about 9 kg, so plan to leave it in one spot. The Magnifica Start with LatteCrema steams milk at the press of a button.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nespresso capsules be recycled in Canada?
Yes. Nespresso takes them back through a free Canada Post bag, and some communities accept them in the household recycling bin. Nespresso reports that about a third of its capsules were recycled worldwide in 2025.
Why is Nespresso Vertuo coffee so foamy?
Vertuo is Nespresso's other capsule line. Vertuo machines spin the capsule at up to 7,000 rpm, which beats air into the coffee and makes most of the thick foam. Original machines such as the Essenza Mini make crema from carbon dioxide in the coffee, the way an espresso machine does.
Is Nespresso as strong as espresso from an espresso machine?
No. Capsule espresso measured 2.2 to 3.6% dissolved coffee in a 2020 study, and a cafe espresso usually has 8 to 12%. A capsule holds about a third as much coffee as a cafe double.
Can I use pre-ground coffee in the Breville Bambino?
Yes, in the pressurised basket that comes with the Bambino. Freshly ground beans in the standard basket make a stronger shot.
Is a bean-to-cup machine worth it over Nespresso?
A bean-to-cup machine costs more to buy and less to run. At 9 g of beans for a single espresso, a cup costs about $0.68 of our coffee, against $0.95 for an Original capsule. The machine also grinds each cup fresh and takes any beans you buy.
