About the Coffee

This is a dark roast built around Peruvian coffee, a origin with a long history of smallholder farming in high-altitude growing regions. Peru's coffee belt runs through the Andes, with farms typically sitting between 1,200 and 2,000 meters. The country has over 220,000 coffee-farming families, most working small plots of 1 to 3 hectares, often in remote areas where farming has been passed down through generations.

Peruvian coffee is frequently grown under shade canopy, which slows the cherry's development and tends to build more density in the bean. Many farms in the region use organic practices by necessity and tradition, relying on compost and natural inputs rather than synthetic fertilizers. The country has one of the higher rates of certified organic coffee production in Latin America, though most small producers farm this way simply because it's how their families have always done it.

Bright Jenny chose Peruvian beans as the base for their house dark, which says something about the coffee itself. Dark roasts can easily flatten a bean's character, so starting with something that has enough structure and depth to hold up through a longer roast matters. Peru's naturally dense, high-grown coffees tend to survive that process better than lower-altitude beans.

Bright Jenny is a coffee roaster based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The roaster page wasn't available at the time of writing, so we're working with limited background on their founding story. What the coffee itself communicates is a roasting approach that treats dark roast as a deliberate style rather than a default, aiming for body and richness without pushing beans into bitterness or heavy oils.
