About the Coffee

The Siane Organic Agriculture Cooperative (SOAC) is based in the Chuave district of Chimbu Province, Papua New Guinea. SOAC brings together smallholder farmers who grow Bourbon and Typica varieties at around 1,350 meters above sea level. The cooperative connects its members directly to international coffee markets, which means farmers earn more than they would selling through local middlemen.

SOAC supports its farmers beyond just buying their coffee. The cooperative helps with financing, organic certification, and quality improvement training. It also runs community programs focused on gender equality and education. The washed process used here involves pulping the cherry, then fermenting and washing the beans before they are dried in the sun, which produces a cleaner, more consistent cup compared to how many smallholder coffees in Papua New Guinea are handled.

Papua New Guinea grows more than 90% of its coffee on smallholder farms and village gardens, with the rest on larger estates. The country ships roughly one million bags per year, with Germany, Australia, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom as its main markets. More than two million people in Papua New Guinea rely on coffee for some part of their income, making cooperatives like SOAC an important part of how those earnings reach farmers reliably.

About Eclipse

Eclipse Coffee Roasters was founded in 2014 in Canmore, Alberta. They roast all coffee fresh to order and screen every coffee they carry against environmental and social sourcing standards before adding it to their lineup. Those findings are published alongside each coffee on their website.

Eclipse pays above market price to the farms they source from, with the goal of helping producers reinvest in quality and community. They carry around 10 to 15 different coffees at any given time, roasting to highlight what is already in the bean rather than imposing a house style across the board.
