About the Coffee

The Adorsi Washing Station sits in the Aricha area of Yirgacheffe, within Ethiopia's Gedeo Zone, at elevations between 1,900 and 2,150 meters above sea level. The station is owned and operated by the Yonis family and serves more than 800 smallholder farmers who bring their ripe cherries in during harvest. This is a family-run operation in a region that has long been a reference point for washed Ethiopian coffees.

Once the cherries arrive at the station, they are carefully sorted, fully washed, and dried slowly on raised beds. The raised bed drying is important here: it allows air to circulate evenly around the coffee and gives the drying process time to develop cleanly, which is a big reason why well-processed Yirgacheffe coffees have the kind of clarity they're known for. This lot is sourced through Common Goal Coffee, a British Columbia-based importer that focuses on quality and long-term producer relationships in Ethiopia.

Washed processing (sometimes called "wet process") means the fruit is removed from the coffee seed before drying, which tends to produce a cleaner, more transparent cup compared to natural or honey-processed coffees. It lets the origin character come through clearly, and in Yirgacheffe, that usually means brightness, structure, and a layered quality that holds up well across different brewing methods.

About Fernwood

Fernwood started in 2007 when Ben and Terra purchased Parsonage Café in Victoria, BC. Their background was in restaurants, not coffee, and when they bought the café, they found a 1936 Barth roaster in the back. That roaster became the starting point for everything. Both came from hospitality, where consistency and attention to detail aren't optional, and that background still shapes how the roastery operates today.

From early on, Fernwood focused on daily quality control and repeatable results rather than chasing trends. That approach was put to the test when they won the Canadian Barista Championship, a result that showed their commitment to doing things carefully was paying off in measurable ways.

"Fernwood is a roaster you'll see all over Reddit as being one of BC's best. I asked to try their coffee, and now I get what all the hype is about. I bought a few extra bags of Manos al Grano for my stash at home."
