About the Coffee

Aleydi Nima Juarez grows this coffee on her five-hectare farm, La Quebrada, in Rumpite Alto near La Coipa in Peru's San Ignacio region. The farm sits at 1,900 to 2,000 meters above sea level and operates as a mixed operation, with coffee grown across several small parcels alongside other crops and livestock. This lot comes specifically from the La Quebrada plot.

Aleydi is part of the Origin Coffee Lab education program, which works with producers on agricultural practices, post-harvest processing, and quality evaluation. The program is built around farm profitability and consistent market access, not just producing a single standout lot. Coffees in the program are held to a consistent standard across the full production process.

This is a washed Marshell variety, fermented in tiled tanks with partial water and then dried slowly on raised beds. That slower drying on raised beds gives the coffee more even airflow and reduces the risk of uneven fermentation during drying. Fernwood sourced this lot through Apex Coffee Imports, an importer they've worked with for years through the Canadian coffee competition scene.

About Fernwood

Ben and Terra started Fernwood in 2007 when they bought Parsonage Café in Victoria, BC. Both came from restaurant backgrounds and brought that same hospitality-first thinking into coffee. When they started a family, they wanted to build something they could grow alongside it, and buying the café gave them that. In the back of that café sat a 1936 Barth roaster, and what began as curiosity about roasting quickly became the core of what Fernwood is.

Their sourcing philosophy has stayed consistent since the beginning: daily quality control, no shortcuts, and a focus on building long-term relationships with suppliers rather than chasing one-off lots. That approach is what led them to importers like Apex, whose focus on transparency and producer relationships aligns with how Fernwood has operated from the start.

"Fernwood is a roaster you'll see all over Reddit as being one of BC's best. I asked to try their coffee, and now I get what all the hype is about. I bought a few extra bags of Manos al Grano for my stash at home."
