About the Coffee

Armenia is the capital of Colombia's Quindío department, sitting within the country's Coffee Triangle. Farms here grow coffee at elevations between 1,200 and 2,000 meters on volcanic soils fed by the Andes. This coffee is a regional Caturra blend, meaning it draws from multiple small farms across the area rather than a single producer.

Caturra is a natural mutation of Bourbon that took hold in Colombia decades ago. It's a compact plant that produces well at high altitude and tends toward clean, balanced cups. Farms in Armenia commonly use shade-grown techniques, where coffee trees grow under a canopy of taller trees that slow fruit development and protect local bird and plant life. Many producers in the region also work under fair-trade and organic frameworks, which set minimum price floors and restrict synthetic inputs.

Hale rates this coffee a 5 on their taste scale, which sits right in the middle of their range. It's designed to work as both espresso and filter, so it doesn't ask much of you in terms of brewing method.

Hale Coffee is an independent roaster based in Toronto. They started near Queen and Spadina and later moved to The Junction Triangle. Their sourcing model is built around direct trade relationships with farmers, which means they buy coffee without a broker in the middle. The idea is that cutting out intermediaries lets them pay farmers more while staying connected to where the coffee actually comes from.
