About the Coffee
Fazenda Joia Rara is run by the Barbosa family in the Cerrado Mineiro region of Brazil, an area known for its well-defined dry season and consistent growing conditions. The farm produces Yellow Catuai, a variety well-suited to the region's climate and known for clean, stable cup quality. The Barbosa family have built a reputation in Cerrado Mineiro for producing standout lots year over year, and Spilt Milk accesses their coffee through Orange Brown Imports, a sourcing partner that works directly with producers in the region.
This lot was processed using a 96-hour anaerobic natural (whole cherry fermented in sealed, oxygen-free GrainPro bags before being dried on patios). Keeping the cherries sealed during fermentation slows the process and concentrates fruit development in a controlled way. After 96 hours, the coffee was pulped and moved to raised drying beds. The result is a coffee with bold fruit character that stays clean and balanced rather than wild or funky.
About Spilt Milk
Spilt Milk started as a café in Revelstoke, BC, built around good coffee and a strong connection to the local community. After years working in hospitality, the team decided to start roasting their own coffee, giving them more direct control over quality and consistency.
Their approach splits into two ranges: an Everyday line built for reliability and easy home brewing, and a Premium line for more expressive, seasonal coffees. This Brazil from Fazenda Joia Rara sits in the Premium range.
